General FAQ

Us vs. the status quo

What packaging materials does Biota use?

At Biota, we utilize regenerative, responsibly sourced renewable, and/or recycled materials whenever possible. All of our materials use non-toxic inks that sidestep petroleum-based solvents. Our bio-based coffee pouches are made using carbon-negative Sugarflex™ laminates, derived from renewable plant-based materials. It is a fully recyclable mono-material (made using only one type of polymer). Our pouches are OK Biobased and FDA food contact approved

Our coffee pouch stickers are made from acid-free, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper. FSC is a non-profit with standards that apply to wood and wood-based products to protect the natural resources of the environment, protect the quality of water, prohibit the harvest of old-growth forests, and protect the social and economic wellbeing of workers and indigenous people’s rights.

Our GRI-certified bubble mailers are made from 100% recycled plastics and are recyclable where soft plastics are accepted.

Is Biota packaging recyclable?

Our coffee pouches and mailers are suitable for recycling in either #4 or soft plastic streams.

Does Biota certify its coffee?

While we support the missions of both the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP), Fair Trade coffee, and Regenerative Organic Certification, those protocols enforce vague practices and require steep fees for land audits.

The NOP guidelines, for example, stipulate that farmers who convert away from conventional agriculture must wait three years before being eligible for certification. In contrast, we equip growers with technical and financial support during this initial transition from extractive agriculture toward— and beyond— organic agriculture, when yields are most likely to suffer.  This journey is more impactful than a seal or certification.

Biota’s model is built on transparency and consideration of the unique challenges our farmers face, in addition to going above organic practices to create positive ecological outcomes.
